Kentucky Football took a significant hit in ESPN’s analytical rankings following the team’s matchup against Alabama, with the 28-point loss causing the Wildcats to slide down the rankings.

The ESPN College Football SP+ rankings have been updated, and the Wildcats have fallen down from their previous 39th ranking to 52nd spot as of Sept. 13. SP+ rankings are a tempo and opponent-adjusted measure of college football efficiency.

Football Power Index told a similar story. ESPN’s FPI is another predictive measurement of team strength that uses data to rate teams and project future performance. Kentucky entered the game at No. 40 before falling to No. 51 following the loss.

Movement in both rankings shows how much Saturday’s performance impacted Kentucky’s standing in analytics. After sitting inside the top 40 in both SP+ and FPI entering the matchup, the Wildcats now find themselves outside the top 50 in each.

Will Stein and his team will look to rebound from the loss and begin climbing back up the rankings as they move forward with their schedule, facing No. 9 Texas A&M this afternoon.

The Wildcats entered the year under new head coach Will Stein, with an apparent increase in roster investment. A new report from The Athletic estimates roster budgets across the Power Four conferences (and Notre Dame), placing Kentucky’s roster spending from a range between $23-$26 million.

This estimate ranks the blue and white No. 31 among the 68 programs and No. 15 in the SEC, ahead of only Arkansas.

Kentucky’s roster budget sits in the middle among Power Four conferences; the numbers illustrate a challenge against conference teams like Georgia, Alabama, Texas A&M and Texas. One issue with the low NIL ranking is that The Athletic finds the best teams pay players the most amount of money. Schools also relatively judge their football spending on the probability of them making the College Football Playoff.

The Athletic showed that teams with a 50% chance of making the playoffs have an average budget of $41-$46 million, while teams with a 5% chance have an average budget of $19-$24 million, which is where Kentucky’s average spending falls.

Texas and LSU lead the rankings with $45 to $50 million in spending, powered by strong transfer portal classes.

Historically, Kentucky prioritized high school recruits, but modern SEC rosters build on massive capital and investments from the transfer portal. Stein now faces more financial limitations – but to mention the hiring of J Batt, who will increase fundraising and improve overall conference prestige.

Kentucky’s $23 to $26 million budget limits its ability to compete with heavily funded programs like LSU, who will keep on gaining more recruits. Going forward, the Wildcats’ ranking could fundamentally change how they use the portal.

Demand for top-tier pricing and massive NIL package offers from ranked schools will expose Kentucky’s risk of becoming a feeder system. This season, the staff leans heavily on undervalued assets who are making a huge difference this season so far.

Quarterback Kenny Minchey’s patience in the pocket, defensive lineman Tavion Gadson’s interior pressure, and senior defensive back Ty Bryant’s leadership to build a cohesive team can still help Kentucky improve this season, as they are huge assets to the Wildcats.

A stronger season from Kentucky can improve future investment and give Stein more room to strengthen the roster, with the margin for error slim on the road – errors, losses, and injuries are magnified for the Wildcats.

In week two, the Kentucky Wildcats put ample pressure on Alabama, leading 17-13 at the half. Although the Wildcats fell short, one defensive player stood out, ranking first in Pro Football Network’s rankings.

Six-foot-five senior defensive lineman Tavion Gadson’s ranked No. 1 among defensive tackles last week with a 90.7 grade.

Against Alabama, Gadson secured five tackles and one and a half sacks, setting the tone early. He also had two tackles for loss and three quarterback pressures.

The senior defensive tackle showed how much he improved in preseason. His Alabama performance marked a major jump from his overall 2025 production, making him a valuable asset for the Wildcats and getting some NFL looks.

Gadson was identified as a key returning defensive lineman for the Wildcats, as Defensive line coach Anwar Stewart specifically expects a huge season for him as new Defensive Coordinator Jay Bateman is bringing a more aggressive style that looks to pressure the quarterback.

Stewart’s return with the new coaching staff has helped Gadson in his development, as the two had been working together since the beginning of his college career.

Gadson suffered a knee injury in 2024, forcing him to miss the first eight games of the season; however, he returned and entered the 2026 season with Preseason All-SEC second-team honors from Pro Football Network.
