Kentucky (18-10, 9-6 SEC) came into Colonial Life Arena on its first three-game skid since 2021, looking fairly bleak in the first 10 minutes of the game. They would eventually pull through in an important road win vs. South Carolina (12-16, 3-12 SEC), defeating the Gamecocks by a score of 72-63 on Tuesday, Feb. 24.
First Half
Despite South Carolina ranking No. 318 in long-range percentage shooting this season (31.0% 3PT), its first 12 points came off of four straight threes, putting the Gamecocks ahead early.
Fortunately for the Cats, their opponent cooled off from distance. Unfortunately for the Cats, their continued scoring droughts have been a concern, as they didn’t break 10 points until nearly 10 minutes into the game.
Three straight triples from Kentucky guard Denzel Aberdeen and a 13-0 run for Big Blue would get them its first lead, though – a lead they would keep for the last nine minutes of the first half.
For the Kentucky fans in Columbia (an impressive amount in the seats for a smaller road game), it must have been relieving to see this kind of bounce back, especially with Otega Oweh starting extremely slow, fresh off of a 29-point performance at Auburn last week.
Second Half
South Carolina started the second half on a 7-0 run to tie it up, immediately wiping the smiles off everyone working at KYInsider.
Oweh would struggle with his shooting in this half – and top-25 freshman Jasper Johnson would continue to struggle outright – but important post play from Andrija Jelavić and a clutch three from (guess who?) Collin Chandler, with under two minutes left, would help Kentucky retain a shallow lead until the final buzzer.
Mo Dioubate notably wins the MVP award for the second half however, becoming the leader on-court the Big Blue Nation knows he can be, making the hustle plays for the Wildcats.
Aberdeen, expending off of his impressive first half, finished the night 19 points, four rebounds and five assists.
What’s Next?
Kentucky can breathe again, but only until they face No. 25 Vanderbilt (21-6, 8-6 SEC).
The Commodores have lost two close games to Missouri and Tennessee, but did you forget about the 25-point beating they put on the Cats? Against all odds coming into the preseason, it’ll be a tall task for Mark Pope and company as they look for much-needed revenge.
Kentucky will host Vanderbilt on Saturday, Feb. 28, tipping off at 2 p.m. ET on ESPN inside of Rupp Arena.
