The No. 11 Kentucky Wildcats (17-5, 4-4 SEC) have now lost four of their last six games in conference play including losing their first home game of the season to Georgia (18-3, 4-3 SEC)
It has been nothing but unfortunate circumstances for the Cats these past few weeks
Winter in the Way
It started with losing Teonni Key weeks ago, and it has been a snowball effect of things going wrong from there
The game Saturday was no exception since the game itself was an unfortunate circumstance as the Wildcat-Bulldog matchup was supposed to take place Sunday the 25th but was rescheduled to Saturday the 24th
The decision was likely due to the winter storm that is expected to give Lexington as much as 25 inches of snow over the weekend
Head Coach Kenny Brooks said after the game “Probably as unprepared going into a game as I’ve ever been,”
Brooks was referring to his preparation for Georgia being cut short due to how late he was told about the rescheduling
“At about 11 o’clock yesterday I was watching film to get ready… and then we were told that we had to play the game [versus Georgia] today.” said Brooks explaining how he found out about the games move to Saturday
First Home Loss
With limited rest, preparation and time, its no question why the Wildcats played the way they did versus Georgia
In the first half the offense was at a near stand still, the Cats were down by as much as 12 in the first half and only put up 26 points as a team
The two big weapons on offense this season, Tonie Morgan and Clara Strack, were each struggling to perform
Morgan finished the game with 10 points and 12 assists, but it felt those stats came to late as through three quarters she had 6 points on 2-5 shooting from the field
And the teams leading scorer, Clara Strack, had an awful shooting night, 9 points on 3-13 shooting, with 8 rebounds to her name, 2 boards below her average
Bad Luck Continues
On top of the loss and performances on the floor, probably the biggest gut punch of the night was seeing Strack go down and be benched the final minutes of the game
Late in the fourth quarter Strack when going for a layup fell and hit the ground hard
The 6’5 center immediately could be seen wincing in pain and reaching for her lower back
Strack was able to stand up and run back on defense on her own, but it was clear the Wildcat was in pain as she kept reaching for that lower back
Coach Brooks would call a timeout and bench Strack the rest of the game
After the game there was no update available on the severity of the injury
With everything that’s been going wrong for UK all that is left now is to regroup
Luckily the snow will keep the team inside for some much needed rest, as well as a full week before the Wildcats have to suit up again
The next time the Cats will dawn the blue and white will be on Sunday Feb. 1 at 2:00 p.m. ET in Fayetteville, as Kentucky will face the Arkansas Razorbacks on SEC network
