After an underwhelming 2024 season, Kentucky was in need of making adjustments.
Following three straight seasons of future NFL talents Will Levis and Devin Leary at quarterback, last season’s quarterback troubles brought on offensive struggles. The Wildcats were bottom 25 in points, completion percentage, passing yards and passing touchdowns out of 134 FBS teams.
In the winter transfer portal window, Kentucky acquired former Incarnate Word signal caller Zach Calzada. Shortly after, Kentucky’s primary starter in 2024, Brock Vandagriff, announced his retirement from college football despite having an extra year of eligibility.
Despite last season’s quarterback play, Wildcats fans had an opportunity to watch Cutter Boley, a four-star recruit out of Lexington Christian Academy, take snaps as a true freshman in four games.
Many expected Boley to take over as starter for the foreseeable future.
“Zach’s probably taking about 75% of those ones reps,” offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan said. “We’re always looking for opportunities to get Cutter in with the ones, not because he deserves it, but you always want to keep him right there and ready with those guys and playing with your first team.”
According to Hamdan, the Kentucky staff is favoring the fifth-year senior over the less experienced Boley.
“As camp goes, things can fluctuate,” Hamdan added.
In 2024, Calzada threw for 3,744 yards, 35 touchdowns and nine interceptions for Incarnate Word of the Southland Conference. Additionally, he ran for 332 yards and five touchdowns.
For context, Incarnate Word is of the FCS, which is considered the lower level of Division I college football.
Calzada is returning to the SEC for the first time in four years. Originally committed to Texas A&M, Calzada made 15 appearances for the Aggies in 2019 and 2021 before playing the previous two seasons at Incarnate Word.
An adjustment to higher competition seems inevitable for Calzada. Nevertheless, both quarterbacks in the conversation for the starting job do have SEC experience.
“Cutter’s been making great progress throughout his time here,” Hamdan said. “Zach, again, is a guy that has a lot of experience… We’re taking it one day at a time.”
Throughout Clazada’s college football career, he made 32 starts, 20 for Incarnate Word and 12 with Texas A&M. Meanwhile, Boley made one start last season, in the season finale against Louisville. In that game he threw for six completions, two interceptions, and 48 yards in a 41-14 blowout.
It will be interesting to see what direction Kentucky goes throughout the season, as 2025 marks Clazada’s final year of eligibility and Boley will only be a sophomore.
Later this month, the Wildcats will make their 2025 season opener on Aug. 30 at Kroger Field against Toledo.
