After enduring what has been statistically the worst passing attack in the SEC for the first two weeks of football, Kentucky, among recent rumors and quasi-demands from around the program, will make a change at quarterback: Cutter Boley is set to start, according to KSR.
Up to this point, Kentucky has still yet to score a touchdown through the air this season. Seventh-year journeyman QB Zach Calzada, who transferred in this offseason from Incarnate Word with the expectation of a starting job, has struggled to find his footing in an oft-criticized Wildcats offense.
Now, HC Mark Stoops and OC Bush Hamdan are expected to make a change, at least for the time being.
This may come as a surprise to many Kentucky fans, who are used to challenging coaching decisions, especially those related to the quarterback, for entire seasons to no avail. Arguably, Kentucky hasn’t had consistent play at the position since Will Levis left for the NFL Draft in 2023. It’s been a carousel of rotating talent and constant controversy ever since, as the once-revered Mark Stoops era seems to be slowly unraveling at the seams.
All the same, for a coach that has always been critiqued for his refusal to make timely decisions, this is a massive, and admittedly positive, change of pace. It’s no secret that the pressure on Coach Stoops has increased since his 4-8 finish last season, full of puzzling losses and questionable game scripts.
After saying that he “wants to see” Boley following the team’s loss to Ole Miss last weekend – a game in which a polished passing attack may have made the difference – it seems that it didn’t take Stoops long to make a decision.
Boley: Make or Break
In limited appearances last season, Boley showed flashes of promise as a freshman thrust into difficult situations. He put on a relatively impressive showing on the road against Texas, as a debilitated Cats roster rolled into Austin and gave the then third-ranked Longhorns an early-game scare.
While he’d struggle soon after in the team’s home loss to the Louisville Cardinals in the last game of an undeniable down season, the potential remained clear, both to the big blue nation as well as the staff pulling the strings.
The incoming home matchup with Eastern Michigan – this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. – provides the perfect opportunity for the sophomore quarterback to settle in against a non-conference opponent before the SEC gauntlet truly begins.
Following his brief appearance at the end of last week’s loss due to Calzada’s (somewhat unclear) shoulder injury, in which Boley completed a 38-yard pass and ran for 14 yards total, the excitement for #8’s takeover is at an all time high.
This is perhaps the most important coaching decision Mark Stoops will make this season, and the result, one way or another, could go on to define his future at the program as Kentucky currently knows it.
It all starts Saturday night at Kroger Field. The hometown-hero-hopeful is in control.
