Tim Couch hasn’t suited up for the Wildcats since 1998 but when a Kentucky football great offers advice, it’s something to be listened to. After all, he was a number one draft pick and is set to be a 2024 College Football Hall of Fame inductee.
On Coach Mark Stoops’ weekly show, on Monday, Couch says he remains optimistic, “I’m still excited about this season and what this team can accomplish”
He also talked about how it feels to be the quarterback and suffer such an embarrassing loss, as Brock Vandagriff and Kentucky took on Saturday. “Certainly, I’ve been there,” Couch said. “Being a part of an expansion team in the NFL my rookie year, you don’t have a lot of time to throw, you don’t have a lot of weapons. I didn’t have a lot of weapons around me in Cleveland at that point. It’s tough. Obviously the QB gets a lot of the credit when the team wins and he’s going to get a lot of the blame when they lose”
Both Couch and Coach Stoops stressed the importance of it being a team game. You need all teammates, the offensive line giving you time to make the throw, receivers, running backs, everyone doing their job, and everyone must execute.
The soon-to-be Hall of Famer’s advice to Brock, “never lose self-confidence.”
“He knows he’s a good football player, and he wouldn’t be here if he wasn’t. You just got to go back to work. Continue to work hard, encourage the guys, and keep being a team player. It’s a long season ahead.”
He also added to the stresses of playing in the SEC. “If you don’t play your best game and the other team plays a good game, they are going to beat you to death. Competing in SEC you have to be very resilient, nobody is going to feel sorry for you.”
The Wildcats will look to reinject some hope back into this young season as they take on No. 1 Georgia on Saturday. For them to do that, it’s going to take a big effort from Vandagriff.
