Kentucky Football Set to Face Most Top 25 Ranked Teams

The first year of Kentucky Football under head coach Will Stein has caused a number of conversations to be had. How many games will they win? Can they compete in the SEC? Will they have a bowl game this year?

All these questions will be answered in due time, but an early outlook of the team’s schedule tells you that the road to success is going to be bumpy, rough and testing.

Kentucky will face seven opponents ranked within the AP Poll’s Preseason Top 25, tied with Arkansas and Texas for the most in the entire country. The SEC has a fair share of ranked games, with Oklahoma, Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Texas A&M playing six each.

Up first for the Wildcats will be the No. 13 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide, playing in Lexington for the first time since 2023.

This once historic program has won eight in a row, holding a 39-2 all-time record against Kentucky. In that same breath, fans have circled this one as a sneaky win to jumpstart the Stein era, knowing that Nick Saban is no longer on the sidelines.

From there the games don’t get any easier at all. The Wildcats will play their first road game of the season down in College Station, facing Jay Bateman’s former team for the first time.

We all know how good the No. 8 ranked Texas A&M Aggies have been over the years, and playing them on their home field is one of the most difficult things to do, let alone actually beating them. Defense will be fun to watch here.

Thankfully, the blue and white have a two-week break in between ranked games after this gauntlet. South Alabama at home on Sept. 26 shouldn’t be much of a sweat, but facing the unranked South Carolina Gamecocks on the road is one that’ll call for 100% commitment and effort.

Led by Heisman contender LaNorris Sellers, the Gamecocks could certainly be a ranked team as the season goes on, but likely not before Oct. 3.

The next two games are the two most difficult on this year’s schedule, with Kentucky facing No. 11 LSU on Oct. 10 and traveling to Oklahoma to face the No. 10 Sooners on Oct. 17.

Obviously, there’s an extra amount of layers in this stretch. Lane Kiffin and the new-look Tigers. John Mateer in a proving-ground atmosphere after last season’s shortcomings. If the Wildcats were to pull out even one win here, it would be historic for the program.

Vanderbilt will come down to town the next week on Oct. 24, which will make for another classic, hearty football game between these two rivals. This has been brewing for years, and to see if the Commodores can maintain their success will be very interesting.

It’s always the perfect time for a Tennessee vs. Kentucky matchup, and that’s exactly what we get on Nov. 7 with the Wildcats heading over to Knoxville. We all know with the emotions of the game that this could go either way. Can you imagine the amount of social-media clowning there will be the next day if Stein waltzes down and defeats the No. 20 Vols in just year one?

Stud or not, the Cats will head back home to host the Florida Gators on Nov. 14. Kentucky has bested Florida in four out of the last five games against each other, so this will be one to head down to Kroger Field for.

UK rounds off the season with two final ranked games, facing No. 25 Missouri and No. 24 Louisville from Nov. 21-Nov. 28. Obviously both teams are barely in the top 25, so by time we get to this point of the season, things could look very different. But hey, it counts!

Seven, yes seven ranked opponents in year one of the Stein era. “Sure, bring it on,” he probably said. It can be really good, really bad, or maybe even somewhere in a respectable middle. Predictions at this point are dull, and no matter what someone may think, this team is more than capable of shocking the nation a couple of times.

Hopefully, seven, yes seven times.

Kentucky Football Conquers College Station, Shock No. 9 Texas A&M With 31-21 Upset Victory

After a blowout loss to then-ranked No. 12 Alabama in the week prior, many questioned if Kentucky was capable of being competitive in Will Stein’s first season as head coach. After stunning No. 9 Texas A&M by a score 31-21 on the road on Saturday, Sept. 19, it seems that the Wildcats may have found their footing and can compete within their conference.

Stein’s first win against a ranked opponent comes in historic fashion, as he becomes the first head coach in Kentucky Football history to defeat a top-ten opponent on the road in his first season.

The first half was highlighted by another strong performance by the Wildcat defense, as outside linebacker Sam Greene led the way with a crucial tackle on 4th and 1 to put an end to the Aggies’ opening drive. After a brief Kentucky possession that ended in a punt, another Aggie drive was ended by Greene, this time with an interception at the UK 22-yard line.

Ending the first quarter in a scoreless tie, Kentucky failed to capitalize in the red zone for the first time this season. A false start pushed the Wildcats back to the Aggie 21-yard line, leading to a missed 39-yard field goal.

An Aggie touchdown put the Wildcats behind 7-0, but a quick drive in response ended in a receiving touchdown to tight end Henry Boyer, leading to a 7-7 tie to end the first half.

In front of 102,000 at Kyle Field, a strong second half by the offense proved to be too much for the Aggies to recover. In just the third quarter, two rushing touchdowns by running back CJ Baxter and a receiving touchdown by freshman wide receiver Kenny Darby stretched the Kentucky lead to 28-7 before the fourth quarter.

Despite a rushing touchdown by Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed, the Aggies’ comeback efforts were too little, too late. A 52-yard field goal by senior kicker Adam Zouagui padded the Wildcats’ lead at 31-14.

A late receiving touchdown by Aggie tight end Micah Riley trimmed the lead to 10 at 31-21, where the score stood for the remainder of the game. Needless to say, Stein was overcome with exhilaration after the game’s final snap, securing his first win in the SEC.

“This is what Kentucky football is supposed to look like,” Stein exclaimed after the game. “This is what we wanted, BBN. Let’s go!”

Kenny Minchey bounced back from a rough performance against Alabama on Sept. 12, with a very strong outing against a tough Aggie defense. He threw for 252 yards and two touchdowns on 14-of-18 passing.

Minchey finished the game on a high note, completing his last 11 passes of the game.

Leading the way on the ground, Baxter finished with 87 yards on 19 carries with two touchdowns. In the air, Sophomore wideout DJ Miller led all Wildcat receivers with 95 yards on only five receptions.

After the improbable victory, Kentucky improves to 2-1 on the season and 1-1 in conference play. The Wildcats will return home rejuvenated on Saturday, Sept. 26 facing off against South Alabama, with kickoff scheduled for 12:45 p.m. ET and streaming live on the SEC Network.

Kentucky Football took a significant hit in ESPN’s analytical rankings following the team’s matchup against Alabama, with the 28-point loss causing the Wildcats to slide down the rankings.

The ESPN College Football SP+ rankings have been updated, and the Wildcats have fallen down from their previous 39th ranking to 52nd spot as of Sept. 13. SP+ rankings are a tempo and opponent-adjusted measure of college football efficiency.

Football Power Index told a similar story. ESPN’s FPI is another predictive measurement of team strength that uses data to rate teams and project future performance. Kentucky entered the game at No. 40 before falling to No. 51 following the loss.

Movement in both rankings shows how much Saturday’s performance impacted Kentucky’s standing in analytics. After sitting inside the top 40 in both SP+ and FPI entering the matchup, the Wildcats now find themselves outside the top 50 in each.

Will Stein and his team will look to rebound from the loss and begin climbing back up the rankings as they move forward with their schedule, facing No. 9 Texas A&M this afternoon.

On Saturday, Sept. 19, the Wildcats will take on Texas A&M on the road for the first away game of the season. Kentucky is headed deep into enemy territory at Kyle Field, with Texas A&M’s stadium holding a capacity of over 102,000 people.

After the Alabama game, Will Stein praised BBN for the incredible atmosphere in Kroger Field, calling it an “elite crowd.” Heading to Texas A&M this time around, Stein’s team has been preparing for a crowd rowdier than they’ve ever seen this season.

In a post-practice interview on Wednesday, Sept. 16, safety Jordan Castell spoke about how the message of practice this week was being in “the eye of the storm.” He emphasized the importance of staying in the middle, calling the fans and the stadium the “storm” and the keeping of the field being the calmness of the eye.

Castell says the Wildcats plan to do this by “bringing our energy,” recognizing that “it’s going to be loud” inside a massive Kyle Field. YouTube

The once Florida Gator played at Kyle Field last year, where the swamp fell 34-17. Castell seemed quite excited to have a chance at redemption while reflecting on his performance last year, saying “you know, interception, I caught me a pick!”

Saturday is quite the exciting game for more than just one Wildcat. Defensive coordinator Jay Bateman will make his first return to College Station since leaving Texas A&M for Kentucky. When asked about Bateman, Texas A&M cornerback Dezz Ricks said, “I have nothing bad to say about coach Bateman…I’m definitely looking forward to the matchup.” KSR
