An SEC opener is always a special experience in college football, and despite Kentucky’s recent pigskin-specific woes, it was no different when the Ole Miss Rebels came to town to kick off conference play.
A packed-out Kroger Field spurred the Wildcats to an early 10-0 lead, highlighted by a Seth McGowan rushing touchdown and two (count em’, two) interceptions from safety Ty Bryant in the first quarter alone.
The second period, though, yielded much dimmer results. Ole Miss tore off a massive chunk play down the sideline on a 4th and 1 pass, shortly scoring, before scoring twice more before the half. Kentucky managed to tally an extra field goal in-between the onslaught, rendering a respectable 17-13 halftime tally.
And despite an Ole Miss field goal following two Kentucky punts out of the half, Coach Bush Hamdan and his offensive crew would eventually respond with a touchdown that, at the time, knotted the game up at 20-20 in the third. A 44-yard deep ball from Zach Calzada to Ja’Mori Maclin ignited Seth McGowan’s subsequent second score.
He would finish with 93 total yards, in addition to two rushing touchdowns.
Even so, Kentucky ultimately couldn’t keep pace with Lane Kiffin’s trademark Ole Miss offense. Every time the Cats came up with something, the Rebels turned around and responded, rendering a frustrating, arms-length dynamic throughout most of the second half for the home team.
Zach Calzada would notably leave the game in the fourth quarter with an injury to his right shoulder, thrusting sophomore Cutter Boley into the limelight for the final few drives. He’d see a deep completion to Hardley Gilmore IV, as well as what was essentially a game-sealing sack just plays later.
Ole Miss survived 30-23, overcoming their two turnovers and shoddy defensive presence with two rushing touchdowns and a relentless ability to generate timely big plays.
After the game, HC Coach Mark Stoops deliberated on his now 1-1 team’s efforts, saying, “We need to be competitive in every snap, there are areas I still need us to improve. It’s early in the year… we’ll improve.”
On Calzada’s injury, Stoops said the quarterback is “banged up,” and that he wants “to see Cutter (Boley).” Where Kentucky will look in the pocket going forward is, for the time being, seemingly unclear.
On the ever-shifting play calling, Stoops said that he’s involved “0 percent.”
The Wildcats will take the field against the visiting Eagles on Saturday, Sep. 13, at 7:30 p.m.
