In early December, it was reported that Liam Coen would be making his return as Offensive Coordinator for the Kentucky Wildcats. Out of respect for the Los Angeles Rams and Sean McVay, he never confirmed the report and stayed until the end of the season.
After enduring over a month of ‘coach talk’, the Big Blue Nation can rest assured that Liam Coen is returning to Kentucky. On Tuesday, the official announcement was made, as he signed a reported three-year, 5.4 million dollar deal.
“Ashley and I are thrilled to be back in Lexington,” Coen said. “I can’t wait to get to work in helping lead the UK offense and bring a championship to Big Blue Nation!”
In Coen’s first go around, he overhauled a run-heavy Kentucky offense to finish 5th in the SEC in scoring (32.3) in 2021, compared to 11th the season before (21.8). Once again, Coen will be tasked with overhauling a poor offense, one that ranked last in the SEC in terms of yards per game (336.3) and points per game (22.1) this past season.
Contrary to his first time at Kentucky, he will be without Chris Rodriguez Jr or a proven offensive line. However, he will have some young talent to work with including All-SEC freshmen receivers Dane Key and Barion Brown.
Mark Stoops and Co have also already done a lot of work in the transfer portal, bringing in top-rated players like QB Devin Leary and RB Re’Mahn Davis, as well as making improvements on the offensive line.
Expect Coen to be here longer than one season this go around, and hopefully, can resurrect a Kentucky offense to one that is capable of competing for the SEC East in the near future.
