Kentucky Gives Presentation to Top Ranked Transfer Norchad Omier

While Oscar Tshiebwe has announced that he will go through the NBA Draft process, the general consensus is that there is a very good chance that he returns to Kentucky.

With that said, John Calipari has been exploring the transfer portal to find someone to fill a similar role if Tshiebwe does leave. Notable transfers that Kentucky has reached out to include Fardaws Aimaq, Johni Broome, and as of yesterday Norchad Omier, the second-best transfer in the portal according to Evan Miya.

Nick Lorenson, a journalist member of the U.S. Basketball Writers Association, reported Wednesday night that Kentucky was one on the long list of schools that have reached out to Omier, and one of the few that have given him a presentation.

The presentation was confirmed with this Facebook picture that showed Omier meeting with Kentucky coaches (John Calipari, Bruiser Flint, Chin Coleman, and Jai Lucas John) along with the man that brought him to the U.S., Miami Prep head coach Pilin Alvarez.

Originally from Nicaragua, Omier is a 6-foot-7, 230-pound transfer coming from Arkansas State. Averaging 17.9 points on 63% shooting and 12.2 rebounds (ranked 5th in the NCAA) last season, Omier was able to bring home the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year and Player of the Year. With an 86.8 defensive rating, he ranked as a top-10 defender in the NCAA.

With that said, Omier does have a glaring weakness, shooting. He has attempted only six threes throughout his two-year career, making only one.

While it is a small sample size, Omier has also seemed to struggle against top opponents as well. In two games against power-five opponents last season (Illinois and Texas Tech), he averaged 4.5 points, 6 rebounds, and 4.5 turnovers.

For Kentucky, Omier has the talent and the body to play in Lexington but it may not be the best fit depending on the roster. With so much uncertainty, it is hard to conclude.

If Cal truly wants to adapt his offensive philosophy to today’s game, at forward he would not be a perimeter shooting threat and could potentially create spacing issues.

That’s not to say there isn’t a world where Omier can’t succeed if he were to come to Kentucky, but it all depends on the fit and if Calipari changes his offensive philosophy.

After Bryce Hopkin’s announcement to transfer on Thursday, it appears that Omier is a target to replace him. While Hopkins showed flashes of potential, Omier has proved himself and would be an upgrade at the college level.

Mark Pope Hints at Next Basketball Commitment, “Details to Come”

Kentucky basketball head coach Mark Pope hints at his next commitment, already with a top five class.
Chet White | UK Athletics

When Mark Pope was first hired by Kentucky in April, the biggest concern was if he could recruit. Within weeks, he assembled a staff and recruited the fifth-ranked transfer portal, including the likes of Jaxson Robinson, Amari Williams, and Lamont Butler.

Now nearly six months later, Pope has gotten some big high school recruiting victories, receiving commitments from five-star prospects Malachi Moreno and Jasper Johnson. While early, the Cats currently have a top-five class for 2025 and are the only program with multiple five-star commitments. Still going after multiple top names, the class is far from finished. In fact, another commitment may be on the horizon.

In an interview with the Sources Say Podcast, talking about his recruiting, Pope said that is currently in a chess match for one recruit.

“Recently, in the fall — I can’t name names, but we’re trying all kinds of different things,” Pope said. “I’m a terrible, terrible chess player, but I love doing it. I do have one intense chess match on the board with a recruit that is for a commitment.”

“We’ll see if that comes to fruition. We’ll see. Details to come.”

Who could this player be? The Wildcats are still pursuing multiple five-star targets, but Pope’s comments are likely about Acaden Lewis or Caleb Wilson.

The former, a four-star combo guard, is expected to make a decision in early November, and will be in town for Big Blue Madness this Friday. The latter, a unanimous top-10 prospect, has been rumored to move his timeline up as well, however, there have been conflicting reports.

Five Star Recruits Hint at Teaming Up at Kentucky

2025 five star recruits Caleb Wilson and Acaden Lewis hint at teaming up at Kentucky, joining Jasper Johnson and Malachi Moreno.

Top recruiting classes were the norm for Kentucky under John Calipari, but could Mark Pope pick up where his predecessor left off?

Pope’s first order of business as the coach of Kentucky was to assemble a staff and he added two of the best recruiters in the country to the staff in Alvin Brooks III and Jason Hart. Together they’ve already locked down in-state, five-star talents Jasper Johnson and Malachi Moreno. Currently sitting with the second-ranked class in 2025, Pope and Co have their eyes set on a few more top recruits, including two who are publicly hinting at joining forces in Lexington.

This past weekend, Kentucky hosted top-five target Caleb Wilson and it could not have gone better as they rolled out the carpet for him. Amidst the visit, fellow Wildcat target Acaden Lewis announced his finalists, Kentucky being one of them. To which Wilson replied, “come on over bro.”

The following day, Wilson posted photos from his visit, to which Lewis commented, “I wanna play w(ith) this guy.”

The most recent interaction came Tuesday night as Wilson and Lewis shared some cryptic emojis.

Recruiting is fluid and young prospects can say a lot of things. However, you have to like this for Kentucky as Wilson and Lewis are expected to make their final decisions this fall. If Pope can get commitments from both, it would be big for recruiting momentum, besting Calipari for Wilson and three other blue-blood schools for Lewis.

Current Kentucky commit Jasper Johnson is even doing his part to recruit them, sending a direct tweet to Wilson.

Kentucky Staff Going All-In for Four-Star Guard Acaden Lewis

The Kentucky basketball staff is going all-in for 2025 four-star guard Acaden Lewis, making a full staff in-home visit.

Kentucky has already landed two top 30 players in the 2025 recruiting cycle in big man Malachi Moreno and combo guard Jasper Johnson, who are both from the surrounding Lexington area. The staff also have their eyes on another top guard in the 2025 class, four-star combo guard Acaden Lewis who attends Sidwell Friends School in Washington, DC.

The staff including head coach Mark Pope, assistants coaches Alvin Brooks, Cody Feuger and Jason Hart, all made the trip to DC to visit with the speedy and athletic guard and his family on Monday.

It was “super cool” Lewis’ father told KY Insider. He talked about the staff looking to make a genuine connection and was very impressed that they visited them at the Trinidad Recreation Center, one of the rough parts of the DMV.

It has been questioned if Pope would bring in two top players at the same position, and especially so with Jasper Johnson’s recent commitment. With a full staff visit, it is clear that he wants to. While talking to Lewis and his family, the Kentucky staff pitched that the two guards’ could co-exist. Explaining that Lewis’ point guard skills complement Johnson’s scoring abilities, putting shooters and playmaking bigs around them.

With a 6-2, 170-pound frame Lewis is one of the more dynamic guards in the country. Having the ability to operate effectively as a true point guard, he can also score via an improved jump shot or with some creativity around the rim. To add, he has real toughness and swagger to his game.

A commitment could be looming as Lewis plans to commit before he signs his NLI in November during the early signing period. Lewis is down to eight schools including Michigan, Kentucky, Syracuse, Duke, UCONN, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Auburn with visits to be scheduled soon as well. Both sides are working to get Lewis in for a visit this fall.
